Against the backdrop of the Chugach Mountains, the Â鶹ÎÞÂë°æ Airlines Center (AAC) on the Â鶹ÎÞÂë°æ campus is a testament to athletic achievement and cultural celebration. As this now iconic Anchorage landmark commemorates its 10th year, it's worth reflecting on its impact, how it has shaped the community and its role in inspiring countless athletes.
The AAC has evolved into a hub on UAA's campus, hosting everything from championship athletics to world-class performances. Its 5,000-seat arena has become the epicenter of collegiate sports in Â鶹ÎÞÂë°æ, providing state-of-the-art facilities for basketball, volleyball and gymnastics programs.
"I had a couple of friends that got me interested in going to some games," said Tom Packer, longtime UAA donor and supporter. Under the guidance of former athletic director Steve Cobb, Packer's involvement deepened. "He's the one that inspired me to step up and do that," he said, reflecting on his journey from spectator to dedicated supporter. The Packer Family Pavilion was named in honor of the Packers' incredibly generous gift of $500,000 to the Building Futures Fund. The Packer family's commitment to UAA athletics exemplifies the center's broader impact.
"It's really exciting to see how many things happen in that arena other than just sports," Packer said, "But as far as we're concerned, sports comes first." His wife Vicki proudly added, "A lot of teams that come here from other states are impressed with what a beautiful facility we have."
Long-time season ticket holder Judy Dresser captured the essence of the fan experience. "The Â鶹ÎÞÂë°æ Airlines Center is a wonderful place to watch basketball games," Dresser said. Her words echo the sentiments of countless supporters who have witnessed memorable victories, including the legendary Great Â鶹ÎÞÂë°æ Shootout tournaments where the Seawolves faced off against Division 1 teams.
The Great Â鶹ÎÞÂë°æ Shootout exemplifies the center's special role in bringing people together. Kate Slyker, chief marketing officer of GCI, recalls, "Staff, sponsors, volunteers and players from all over the country coming together for the love of sports and teamwork. We literally ate our Thanksgiving meals at the Â鶹ÎÞÂë°æ Airlines Center together."
From NCAA tournaments to high school graduations, the center has hosted events that have united the community and showcased Â鶹ÎÞÂë°æ's athletic talent. Each game, match and event has added to a rich tapestry of memories and achievements.
"As we celebrate ten incredible years, we take immense pride in celebrating the success of the Â鶹ÎÞÂë°æ Airlines Center with our community partner UAA," said Scott Habberstad, managing director for the Â鶹ÎÞÂë°æ market at Â鶹ÎÞÂë°æ Airlines. "It is inspiring to witness how the AAC has transformed into a gathering place that unites our community, empowers athletes and performers from across the state to chase their dreams and elevates our shared Â鶹ÎÞÂë°æn spirit."
The center has become especially vital during Â鶹ÎÞÂë°æ's long winters. As Slyker notes, "When it is cold and dark, having an outlet that is both fun and healthy is crucial for our well-being. The Seawolf athletes showcase healthy living, in a way that is relatable and inspiring."
Beyond athletics, the center has become a focal point for major life events, from graduations to cultural performances, serving as a gathering place that brings Â鶹ÎÞÂë°æns together. "It has made the Â鶹ÎÞÂë°æ Airlines Center a destination which people want to be at," reflects Slyker.
As the AAC enters its second decade, it continues to serve as both a sporting venue and a cultural hub. The facility symbolizes UAA's commitment to excellence and vital role in Â鶹ÎÞÂë°æ's athletic and cultural landscape.
The past decade has seen countless victories, emotional moments and community celebrations within these walls. As the AAC moves forward, it remains poised to inspire new generations of athletes and create countless memories for the Â鶹ÎÞÂë°æ community.
