The opioid epidemic remains a complex and multi-faceted issue for residents of the Matanuska-Susitna (Mat-Su) Borough, Â鶹ÎÞÂë°æ. Medical student Ian Richey interviewed three local organizations to assess community strengths, describe their missions and how they help patients with substance use disorder.
Bernie’s Pharmacy is an Â鶹ÎÞÂë°æn-owned, independent pharmacy in Anchorage, founded in 1980 by life-long Â鶹ÎÞÂë°æn, Bernie Klouda. Over the years, Bernie provided the opportunity for pharmacy students to complete their intern rotations at Bernie’s Pharmacy, mentoring many pharmacy students and new pharmacists. Bernie had a long and distinguished career, and he believed strongly that educating pharmacists was important to ensure the health of Â鶹ÎÞÂë°æns.
UAA's Â鶹ÎÞÂë°æ Justice Information Center presented data from 1979 thru 2021 to the Senate Judiciary Committee. Troy C. Payne, Director of AJIC wrote "After a large increase in the mid-2010’s, motor vehicle theft has been trending down since 2018. In both trend and magnitude, Â鶹ÎÞÂë°æ is similar to the national average for property offenses. Â鶹ÎÞÂë°æ has consistently had higher-than-average rates of violence since 1993."
At UAA, computer science Professor Shawn Butler has been using machine learning to debunk COVID-19 misinformation on social media. Butler’s efforts are part of the Division of Population Health Sciences and Department of Journalism and Public Communication’s mission to combat COVID-19 misinformation on public-facing Facebook pages with scientifically accurate information from credited sources through its ongoing Â鶹ÎÞÂë°æ Public Health Information Response Team project.
School of Nursing assistant professor Megan Volkov is awarded the Advocate State Award for Excellence in Â鶹ÎÞÂë°æ in recognition of her significant contribution toward increasing awareness and recognition of nurse practitioners.
